2011 Summer Road Trip - Day 7

Thursday, June 2, 2011

Today we left Dumas, TX, to head to Sweetwater, TX.  We decided to stop in Amarillo along the way, and I'm sure glad we did!  We only did a couple of things in Amarillo, but they sure were fun!

The first place we stopped was The Big Texan.  This restaurant does everything in a BIG way!  We watched two men try (and fail) the Big Texan's Challenge.  The men agreed to eat the 72oz steak with all the trimmings in less than an hour.  If they can manage to do it, they get their dinner free.  If they cannot do it, they have to pay $72 for their meal.  Needless to say, both men lost the bet, and both had to pay for their dinner.  The second guy, a little man who weighed in at around 160 pounds, looked positively green when he left the table!  David decided to skip the 72oz steak, but we did have a pretty good lunch!  Reese spent a lot of her time stacking up the butter tubs while we were waiting for our dinner.  Maybe she's a construction engineer in the making!

After lunch we went outside to see the Texas shaped pool and some of the other oddities outside the restaurant.  Some of them were pretty cheesy, but the kids thought they were fun!

Our next stop was at Cadillac Ranch.  Cadillac Ranch is a piece of artwork/sculpture created in 1974 by an art group called Ant Farm.  It consists of junk Cadillac automobiles representing a number of evolutions of the car line, most notably the birth and death of the tail fin.  The span of years goes from 1949-1963.  The Caddies are buried nose first in the ground at an angle corresponding to the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.  My kids were excited to see it, and I was happy to take them!

Reese painted as much on herself as she did the cars!

When we got back in the car after visiting the Caddy graveyard I got the best reward of all.  Reese said. "Mommy, you are the best mommy EVER!  I loved painting today!"  Awww... You gotta love that!
