2011 Summer Road Trip - Day 6

Wednesday, June 1, 2011
Today we had to leave Lakin.  We are headed to Beeville, Texas, to see David's grandmother, Socorra, who is not doing so well.  We will be making a few stops on the way to Beeville, though!  Remember when I said that David decided not to EVER travel more than five hours in the car with the kids again?  Well, that messed up his plan of driving from Lakin to Poteet, Texas, in two days.  He booked us a room in Dumas, Texas, and I am very grateful!  We saw some cool things along the way since we weren't in such a rush to get to our destination.

We didn't get to stop at the park, but we did drive through the National Grassland!

This was our first trip through the Oklahoma Panhandle.

We stopped in Boise City, Oklahoma, to see "Cimmy".  The kids thought that was the best part of the day!

There was a huge piece of petrified wood at the visitors center.

The main attraction!  CIMMY!

Apparently Boise City was accidentally bombed by friendly fire back in the 1943.  We looked all around for the bomb crater, and eventually found it at the courthouse square.  Boy, were we surprised!  The crater was no bigger than the wheel of my car!  No wonder we missed it!  Katie just had to get out and have her picture taken with the monument.

Overall we had a terrific day!  I just love traveling at a leisurely pace and actually getting to SEE some of the things we are passing on the highway!
